Russian Supreme Court Upholds a 13-Year Prison Sentence for Journalist Serhii Tsyhipa

On 27 March, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation considered the cassation appeal of Serhii Tsyhipa, a journalist and public figure from Nova Kakhovka in Kherson Region. The sentence of 13 years in prison was upheld.

This was reported by the Crimean Human Rights Group.

According to the CHRG, the meeting was attended by representatives of the embassies of England, the Czech Republic, France and the EU Delegation.

As the CHRG reported, Serhii Tsyhipa was moved to Matrosskaya Tishina, a detention centre in Moscow, one of the most notorious in Russia.

Serhii Tsyhipa is a public activist from Nova Kakhovka, Kherson Region, the head of the Kakhovka Springboard NGO and a civil journalist. On 12 March 2022, Tsyhipa was detained, the contact with him was cut off, and his family did not know where he was for a long time.

Only in October 2022, it became known that Serhii Tsyhipa was being held in Simferopol’s Detention Centre No. 1.

In the beginning of December it became clear that Tsyhipa was moved to a new detention centre in Simferopol.

In December 2022 it became known that Tsyhipa was charged with espionage (Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

On 6 October 2023, the so-called ‘Supreme Court of Crimea’ sentenced Sergei Tsyhipa to 13 years in a maximum security colony, having been convicted of ‘espionage’ under Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code.

In April, Tsyhipa was transferred to Skopin, Riazan Region.

Currently, Serhiy is being held in Moscow Detention Centre No. 4 in Medvedkovo.

On 14 February 2025, the Russian Third Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal against the 13-year imprisonment sentence and upheld it.
