Southern District Military Court sentenced a resident of Yalta, Petro Zhytskyi, to 24 years in prison in the case of the ‘assassination attempt’ on former Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleg Tsariov.
According to the Russian investigators, from 1 December 2022 to 26 October 2023, Zhytskyi allegedly followed Tsariov under orders from the Ukrainian intelligence services, and in May-June 2023, he ‘identified a possible place for an assassination attempt’. According to the Russian investigators, Zhytskyi was recruited by the Ukrainian intelligence in 2022.
It is alleged that the man arranged a hiding place with weapons, which were then used during the attempted murder. During the search, an improvised explosive device was allegedly found in the man’s possession.
Russian court found the man guilty on charges of high treason, terrorism, attempted assassination of a public figure and illegal trafficking in explosives. The man will spend the first five years in prison, and the rest of his sentence in a maximum security colony.
