Former Imam, a Disabled Person, Lost 12 Kilos After Placement in Mental Hospital

Remzi Kurtnezyrov, a former Imam of Lobanovo Village Mosque, and a political prisoner of Disability Group II, was held under a mental health assessment according to court instruction.

The political prisoner was sent to the “Crimean Republican Psychiatric Hospital no 1” despite of serious illnesses and a home arrest imposed due to this. He lost 12 kilos. This was reported to CRIMEAN SOLIDARITY by his daughter, Emine Isliamova.

The inspector took Mr. Kurtnezyrov for a psychiatric examination as part of the preliminary investigation on July 18 and placed him in the hospital, where Remzi spent four weeks, despite the fact that the former imam was declared permanently disable. He has suffered three strokes, a skull trepanation, he has diabetes, high blood pressure, and the right side of his body is completely disabled.

According to Emine Isliamova, the family could not contact their father for all this time. He was not allowed to be visited, too. The former imam was brought home on August 15.

“Once he entered the yard we saw immediately [that he had lost so much weight]. He has changed a lot. <…> This examination was compulsory. Though he is all, they said [FSVP] that he will be anyway placed [in hospital], be questioned,” Mrs. Isliamova said.

She added that the conditions in the hospital were “poor”. Mr.Kurtnezyrov was in the ward with mentally ill people. In total, there were 11 people in the room.

“The stench there was so strong, these people did not bathe. The toilet was shared – no partitions. Bathing too – there are no cabins, everything is shared,” the imam’s daughter added.

Previously, lawyer Emil Kurbedinov explained that according to the law, investigators should not conduct a compulsory psychiatric examination in cases of terrorism.

“But the FSB decided to establish this conveyor, and has been using this scenario for several years, “processing” political prisoners in the mental hospitals. <…> Placing in the hospital is rather formality. You may hear the following reason from the investigators [why this is done]: “And suppose he would start playing fool?” the lawyer mentioned.

On the morning of March 5, 2024, security men searched 10 Crimean Tatars in the Bakhchysaray and Dzhankoy districts of Crimea. On the same day, the court imposed a pre-trial restraint on four of them. These were Crimean Tatar activists Memet Liumanov, Aziz Azizov, Rustem Osmanov, and Mustafa Abduramanov. They were placed in the Pre-Trial Detention Center. All four activists were previously brought to administrative liability for supporting earlier arrested compatriots during the trial. In addition to them, Ali Mamutov, Enver Khalilayev, Nariman Ametov, a resident of Dzhankoy, Imam Vokhyd Mustafayev and activist Arsen Kashka were detained.
