Appaz Kurtamet, A Crimean Tatar from Novooleksiyivka, Was Indicted

Mr.Appaz Kurtamet, a 20-year-old Crimean Tatar from Novojleksiyivka, was charged with committing a crime under Article 208-1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (financing of an armed formation).

As stated in the FSB resolution, which text is available to the CHRG, “Kurtamet, being aware of the illegal activities of the CRIMEA Islamic battalion, transferred 500 hryvnias to the representative of the battalion. Kurtamet did not notify timely the authorities thereof or otherwise failed to contribute to preventing the activities of the CRIMEA Battalion.’

The resolution to prosecute as a defendant was signed by “investigator of the investigative department of the FSB for Crimea and Sevastopol”, Lieutenant of Justice A.V. Cheblukov.

The article penalties range from ten to twenty years with restriction of freedom for a period of one to two years.

To remind: Mr.Appaz Kurtamet, a 20-year-old Crimean Tatar, a teacher of the Crimean Tatar language from the village of Novooleksiyivka, Kherson Region. On July 23, he left Novooleksiyivka for Crimea to visit his relatives. He is known to have arrived at the Russian checkpoint between the occupied Crimea and the Kherson Region. Since then, his contact with relatives has been lost. For almost three months there was no information about his whereabouts and a legal status. There was also no information on the reason for detention and charges made.

On October 10, ‘Kievskiy District Court’ of Simferopol imposed a pre-trial restriction on Kurtamet: keeping in custody until December 5.

As Nariman Dzhelial informed his lawyer, Appaz Kurtamen has been transferred to a new pre-trial detention center that was put into operation in Simferopol in late October.
