The Crimean Human Rights Group has analyzed the information published on the website of the Federal State Statistics Service Office for the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol.
The analysis shows that during the period of peninsula occupation as of August 2019, 158,433 people moved from the Russian Federation regions to Crimea, including 87,000 to the “Republic of Crimea” and 71,433 to the city of Sevastopol. These are the data on the Russian Federation nationals who officially registered at the place of staying in Crimea. Since not all the Russian Federation nationals are registered at their new place of residence, the number of people resettled to Crimea may higher, in fact.
Thus, the Russian Federation violates Art. 49 of the Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilian persons in time of war, that states: the Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.
Such transfer changes the demographic profile of the occupied territory.
According to Krymstat, the total population in Crimea as of January 1, 2019 is 2,355,030 people. Including the “Republic of Crimea” – 1,911,818 and Sevastopol – 443,212.
